Wer war Apollon und welche Sagen stecken hinter dieser göttlichen Figur?

In zahlreichen griechischen und römischen Sagen wird er bewundert, verehrt und gefürchtet – Apollon, der Gott des Lichts, der Sonne und der Künste.

Er gehört dem Kreis der zwölf mächtigsten Götter des Olymps an, dem höchsten Berg Griechenlands, und ging aus einer Verbindung von Zeus und der schönen Titanin Leto hervor. Gemeinsam mit seiner Schwester Artemis, der jungfräulichen Jagdgöttin, wurde er auf Delos geboren, das später neben der Orakelstätte Delphi zu seinen Heiligtümern zählt. Von den Römern wurde der griechische Gott zu „Apollo“ umgetauft, erhielt jedoch im Vergleich zu seiner früheren facettenreichen Gestalt abstraktere Eigenschaften, die seine Funktion statt seine Persönlichkeit hervorhoben, so wurde er auch als römischer „Gott der Selbsterkenntnis“ betitelt.

Apollon (oder auch Apollo) spielte sowohl in der griechischen als auch in der römischen Mythologie eine Rolle.

Der glänzende Apollon ist ein sagenumwobener Gott, der für Recht, Frieden und Ordnung sorgt, aber auch als Rächer und Töter in Erscheinung tritt. Jedes seiner Attribute lässt sich in seinen Geschichten nachverfolgen. So steht die Lyra bzw. Leier für seine musikalischen Künste. Mehrere Male begibt sich Apollon in einen Musikwettstreit und geht als Sieger aus diesen hervor. Als der Sartyr Marsyas ihn zu einem Wettstreit auffordert und verliert, wird er als Strafe für seine Anmaßung bei lebendigem Leib gehäutet. Hermes hingegen entführte einst die Rinder des Apollons und trieb sie rückwärts hinaus, um ihn zu verwirren. Ihm jedoch vergab der sonst gestrenge Gott, weil er Hermes Spiel mit der Lyra bewunderte. Das Attribut des Lorbeers verdankt Apollon einer römischen Sage, die in Ovids Metamorphosen festgehalten ist. Dabei verliebt er sich in die Nymphe Daphne und verfolgt sie solange, bis ihr Vater, ein Flussgott, seine Tochter in einen Lorbeerbaum verwandelt.

Der Dreifuß erklärt sich daher, dass das Orakel von Delphi zu Apollons Heiligtümern zählt. Hier erschlug er die Schlange Python, die Hera einst auf die Kinder der Leto ansetzte, um sie zu vernichten. Sowohl durch seine Macht über das Orakel als auch durch seine Gabe der Prophezeiung, die Zeus ihm in die Wiege legte, wird Apollon zum Gott der Weissagung. Priesterinnen auf Delphi nannten sich in Angedenken an die Schlange Pythia und saßen in Trance auf einem Dreifuß, um das Orakel einzelner Menschen oder einer ganzen Stadt zu verkünden. Zudem wird der Gott des Lichts auch mit Pfeil und Bogen dargestellt. Mit diesen Waffen griff er in den Tojanischen Krieg auf Seiten der Tojaner ein, indem er Agamemmnon mit einem Pfeil die Pest sandte. Dies war die Rache dafür, dass der Grieche Chryseis, die Tochter der troianischen Apollon Priesters als Kampfbeute genommen hatte.

 

In der bildenden Kunst ist er bis heute ein beliebtes Motiv geblieben, bei denen seine tragenden Attribute – die Lyra, der Lorbeer und der Dreifuß – häufig zum Einsatz kommen. Sein Aussehen strahlt vor jugendlicher Schönheit und gibt das Bild eines blond gelockten Mannes mit athletischem Körper und kraftvoller Ausstrahlung wider. Berühmte Werke sind jene am Westgiebel des Zeustempels von Olympia sowie Abbildungen auf griechischen Trinkgefäßen, die Teile der Sagen widerspiegeln. Zahlreiche Gemälde zeigen ihn mit Pfeil und Bogen, einem Lorbeerkranz, umgeben von Licht oder einer Herde aus Tieren. In Skulpturen aus Marmor wie dem Apollo von Belvedere offenbart er die vollkommene körperliche Anmut einer griechischen Gottheit. Der Kopf der Statue diente Michelangelo als Vorbild für die Abbildung von Jesus Christus in der Sixtinischen Kapelle, während Goethe über ihn schrieb: „Apollo von Belvedere, warum zeigst du dich in deiner Nacktheit, daß wir uns der unsrigen schämen müssen?“ Heute steht die Apollo Skulptur in dem Statuenhof des vatikanischen Belvedere und ist Teil der Antikensammlung der Vatikanischen Museen.Apollon trägt viele Beinamen. Er ist der Gott der Musik, genauso wie er mit der Zeit die Attribute des Sonnengotts Helios übernahm, weshalb er auch Phoibos, „der Glänzende“, genannt wird. Auch als Gott der Heilung machte er sich in der griechischen Mythologie einen Namen, indem er Mensch und Natur von Schmerzen befreite und ihnen Heilung versprach. Die Feldfrucht beschützte er vor Nagetieren und sengender Sonne, während er gleichzeitig die Gesundheit der Tiere bewahrte. Begründer der Medizin wurde jedoch sein Sohn, Asklepios, der aus einer Verbindung mit der Menschfrau Coronis hervorging.
